We need to know your particular application. If you are a high school student, university level biology/science major or pre-medical student, then your needs and budget would be different from a hospital laboratory. For the highest end quality needs, we can supply medical grade clinical equipment for examining blood, tissue samples, and other biological specimens under the medical microscope. For student use, we need to know your level of grade and the specific application. For example, if you are in a home school study program then a simple and cheap monocular compound microscope may fit your needs just fine. If you are a biology major in a university setting, then a more professional, higher grade unit is called for. In this case, a binocular, or even trinocular version (with photography port and camera equipment) may be necessary.

Do I need a compound microscope? This may be your original question. First, let us examine the different microscope types. If you are looking at larger specimens, such as coins, stamps, insects, circuit boards, and such, then a stereoscopic microscope is what you need. The stereo optics are only going to be applicable for the lower power magnifications. A compound microscope would not give you the depth of field on a larger specimen, making focusing on anything rather difficult. On the other hand, if you are looking at prepared microscope slides, or are making your own slides from biological specimens you acquire, then a compound microscope is exactly what you need. This type of microscope is for high power magnification in the order of 40x up to 1600x. The higher power magnifications allow viewing of bacteria, parasites, blood cells, and a host of other fascinating biological life under the microscope. Students often have their own sets of prepared microscope slides or get their own specimens such as cheek cells or pond water. Hospitals and veterinary clinics take live specimens from their patients and look at them under the compound microscope to make a more accurate diagnosis of medical conditions.
